Reflections on Building Bridges International English Club

Numazu Higashi High School is known for the excellence and achievements of its students.  Numato-sei are presented with many opportunities through their school with a large selection of club activities and specialized classes. The BB Club is one of those opportunities for students who have an interest in foreign cultures and English studies. In addition to their other club activities, these students join other BB members once a week for an intensive, English only, class that strives to teach them not only better English for communication, but also to educate them about world issues and foreign cultures.

Over the last two years I have had the privilege of teaching the BB Club. These students have given me some of my best memories from my time at Numato. The BB Club is an opportunity for me to teach a small group of students, so I can get to know each one of them individually and the students have a chance to use their English with me much more than in their regular OC1 class. In my experience, the BB students have shown the most improvement of their English during their first year at Numato, not only in their knowledge of grammar and vocabulary, but in their confidence in speaking and listening.

The trip to Washington D.C. offered to some of the students is a priceless experience. Getting a chance to use their English skills in a foreign country has taught many of these students how important it is to be confident in their communication. When students return from America, they tell me not only all of the things they learned about America (things a textbook just can’t teach), but also about their ability to use English, including their struggles with pronunciation and understanding. After their international experience the students can know what direction they would like to focus their studies. Some of them find a passion for international relations, others find that they are more interested in English translation services, and all of them learn more about the world outside of Japan.

The Building Bridges International Club has provided Numato-sei with a very valuable experience that will benefit the Japanese society in their efforts at becoming a part of the international community. I hope this opportunity can continue for many years to come, and that the students who are members of the club will remember their experience for the rest of their life.

Hello.  My Name is Greg McAllister.

I am the new Assistant Language Teacher here at Numazu Higashi Senior High School.  I look forward to meeting you.  I have come to teach the students at Numazu Higashi from Sydney, Australia.  I graduated with a Bachelor of Law and a Bachelor of Arts (majoring in History, Politics and Philosophy).  In addition to the Bachelors Degrees, I have also completed a Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice.  Prior to coming to Japan I was employed as a lawyer in a medium sized law firm and I specialized in Commercial Litigation and Dispute Resolution.

Learning any new skill can be difficult and learning a second language is no exception.  I have begun to learn Japanese and I am finding this very difficult.  But slowly, and with much practice, I will get better.  This is the same with studying English. It takes time to learn, but with practice it will become easier.

The rewards for becoming a proficient English speaker are plentiful.  Needless to say, such skills are recognized as valuable in the business community, but often overlooked is the opportunity to use English to develop a network of personal relationships (both business and social relationships) in addition to your native networks.  Developing strong English speaking networks will result in many new opportunities being presented that simply would not be available without English skills.

The opportunity provided to the participants of the BB Club to communicate with a native English speaker regularly will lead to an improvement in the club members’ ability to converse in English.  The chance to meet with me regularly allows those students to feel comfortable around me and encourages the students to continue developing their language skills.  The environment and culture of the BB Club can help create special learning opportunities not available to the students in a traditional classroom.

I believe that the BB Club is a valuable gift to Numazu Higashi’s students and it is my aim to ensure that the program continues to achieve its aims of internationalization and communication.

Dozo Yoroshiku Onegaishimasu.

私はこの度新しいALT(アシスタント ランゲージ ティーチャー:英語補助教員?)
