「哲学（philosophy）という、ギリシアに由来するこの語のそもそもの意味は、よく知られているように、「愛智」つまり「智を愛すること」である。それは、何か別のことのために、つまり、何かの役に立つから「智を愛する」のではない、そうではなくそれは、純粋に「智を愛する」、ただ徹底的に考え抜きたいが故に、ただ徹底的に知りたいが故に、ただそのことの故にのみ、「智を愛する」ことである。
